Media Statements by Mosquito™ Opponents erroneous and misleading |
VANCOUVER – Recent media statements by Montreal youth centre advocates and representatives of the Quebec Human and Youth Rights Commission are not accurate and are deliberately misleading people regarding the safety of the Mosquito™ anti-loitering deterrent device.
In response to recent comments decrying the potential impact on the hearing of targeted groups, Moving Sound Technologies (MST) - the US and Canadian importers of the Mosquito™ products - in conjunction with the manufacturers (UK-based Compound Security Systems Ltd) unequivocally state that all studies indicate the devices are benign and cause no harmful effects when installed and used properly.
“The Mosquito™ device has been thoroughly tested by a number of agencies, including Health Canada, the Belgian Superior Health Council, the Staffordshire Police force and the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, among others. While some of these reports caution against especially close proximity and extraordinary prolonged exposure to such a device, the Mosquito™ is designed to operate intermittently and NOT at ultrasonic frequencies. It MUST be understood that the Mosquito™ device is completely safe and inaudible except to those who are identified exhibiting anti-social behaviour. Brief exposure to the sound emitted will discourage them from remaining in the area of the installed device, nothing more.”
The legality of the product has been fully explored and tested. Recently over 92 per cent of members of the European parliament voted NOT to ban the device as it is a benign and effective tool. They determined overwhelmingly it does NOT constitute a breach of the Human Rights Act.
As clearly stated in British Security Industry Association (BSIA) guidelines – and as is clearly indicated in the user information supplied with each product – the Mosquito™ is designed to be used ONLY when a group of teens or young adults are loitering or acting in an anti-social manner. The device is NOT intended to be left on constantly in order to create a ‘no go’ area or inhibit regular human traffic movements. Proper installation and use of the Mosquito™ greatly reduces the threat of violence or physical harm. It is a benign and non-confrontational solution to unwanted gatherings of youth in public areas and outside of private businesses.
“Potential customers in Quebec and elsewhere need to know that our product is both effective and harmless”, says MST president Mike Gibson. “They need to know that inaccurate and untrue statements made by organizations opposed to this preventative device will not go uncontested. We stand by the product we market and have taken every step to know its effectiveness is not compromised by any adverse impacts.”
